No touching required — and experts say it can actually be good for you

A sex therapist has explained that there are real health benefits linked to masturbating without using your hands, and it’s not just about being able to scroll on your phone while doing it.

Most people at some point have found a private moment to explore their bodies, but it turns out that some can actually reach pleasure without ever touching themselves directly.

This practice is called syntribation. It usually involves a woman crossing her legs and pressing her thighs together to create stimulation around the clitoris and vulva.

Of course, this method isn’t really suitable for men, since the pressure could end up being quite painful. But for those with a clitoris and vulva, it can be a simple and effective way to reach climax.

According to sex therapist Kimberly Thomas, who spoke with Women’s Health, this technique isn’t only safe but can also be a subtle way to enjoy some personal time without drawing attention.

"Syntribation is also a safe way to explore your own sexuality, build familiarity and comfort with your sexual self, and gain sexual confidence," she explained, adding that its discreet nature makes it appealing to many people.

"Please keep in mind that people around you are not consenting to being around you as you masturbate, so opt for more independent settings."

Thomas also noted that syntribation can be especially helpful for beginners who are still learning about their own bodies, as well as for people with physical disabilities who may find other methods difficult.

Beyond the physical aspect, experts highlight how masturbation can lift your mood and boost self-confidence. Doctors widely agree it’s a 'common and healthy part of human sexuality' with benefits that extend to both mind and body.

Dr. Sham Singh told The Handy that timing matters too. A quick session in the morning can help energize you for the day, while doing it at night can help you unwind before bed.

He added that masturbation provides 'numerous psychological and physical advantages' — from relaxing tense muscles and improving mental wellbeing to even easing 'premenstrual tension caused by menstruation'.

So if syntribation is the method that works best for you, it might be worth embracing it. And, as one playful example, you could even enjoy the endorphin rush of an orgasm while indulging in chocolate at the same time.

The possibilities really are endless.

That said, experts stress moderation. Dr. Jen Claude advised that masturbation is healthy and positive 'so long as it doesn't interfere with your daily life; it doesn't interfere with your mental wellbeing, it does not interfere with your relationships; interfere with your ability to go to your job or lead a happy, healthy, productive life'.

At the end of the day, it’s about knowing your own body, paying attention to your mental state, and making the choice that feels right for you.
